Unlike with iPhones, there's more than Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips that Android flagships can pack – there's the Samsung-made Exynos and the high-end Dimensity option by MediaTek.

Now, the first details about the Dimensity 9600 have started to pop up.

A true Snapdragon rival

The consensus is that Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is among the best chips currently available – so everybody's expecting miracles out of the Gen 6 later in 2026.

But the upcoming Snapdragon will face stiff competition in the likes of the rumored MediaTek Dimensity 9600, which could be used by Oppo in 2027.

According to popular and reputable tipster Digital Chat Station (on Weibo), the 9600 chip will be built on TSMC's 2nm (N2P) process. In simple terms, this refers to how small and advanced the chip's internal components are.

The smaller the number, the more transistors can fit into the chip, which usually leads to better performance and improved energy efficiency. A move from 3nm to 2nm is a significant step forward, meaning phones could become faster while also depleting less battery power.

The new design

What's more, its CPU design might be an unorthodox one with a "2+3+3" layout. This means two prime cores and six high-performance cores.

For reference, the Dimensity 9500 (built on an advanced 3nm process) comes with a single 4.21GHz core, three 3.5GHz cores for sustained power and four 2.7GHz cores for efficiency.

That older chip mixes one ultra-powerful core for peak performance, several strong cores for heavy tasks, and smaller ones that save battery during lighter use. The new 9600 could shift away from that balance by focusing more on raw power across the board, which may lead to faster performance in demanding apps and games.

How about graphics?

In terms of graphics, the Dimensity 9600 could arrive with a fresh GPU for dealing with more and more complex tasks.

This is important because the GPU handles gaming, visuals, and effects like lighting and shadows. A newer GPU would likely mean smoother gameplay, better graphics quality, and improved support for advanced features like ray tracing, which makes games look more realistic.

The only thing that's still not discussed is the eventual price. But it won't be budget-friendly, I can promise you that.
